review: Telephoto Lens Hanimex 80 - 200 mm with M42 Thread (appr. € 75,- second hand)

This lens is a zoom design. While this design is great for every-day photography it is not very suitable for astrophotography. That's because there are too many lenses and the internal mechanism to shift the lenses introduces aberrations. This makes it difficult to keep all lenses perfectly on the optical axis. This Hanimex lens suffers mostly from strong astigmatism and spherical aberration. Astigmatism is changing the point shape of stars to elongatated banana-like shape. It is so strong that it can not even be covered by stopping the lens down to its maximum. This is true for the spherical aberration too which never allows for a good focus.

Like most zoom lenses it is two slow by design.

Conclusion

This lens is not recommended for astrophotography.
