review: Eye piece Meade Plossl Series 4000 (appr. € 85,- each)

These eye pieces are sold in Germany with the brand name Bresser. They are from the same factory as the meade Series 3000 ones. My dealer said that actually they are *identical* to the original and first choice quality. But for that *OEM* brand reason they are a bit cheaper than noticed above. I have never looked through the original Meade ones so I can only *believe* that.

the middle one has a special focus ring and extension tube not supplied by manufacturer

They are 4-element parfocal, multi-coated eyepieces of the classical Plossl design. They have an Apparent Field of 52°.
I tested the focal lenghts of
  • 32 mm
  • 20 mm
  • 12.4 mm
All of these eye pieces have no obvious arberrations. Because of the efficient multi-coating there are no ghost lights in the view even when there are street lamps around. The rubber cups they have help a lot for that too. It is easy to hold the correct distance to the eye lens to have a good and comfortable view. They are quite sharp to the edge with a f/8 Newton. With a f/6 they started to fall off a bit and with f/4 they started to be a bit problematic. Well, that's normal for lower priced eye pieces but Meade declares they are perfect with f/4 too.

A problem I was faced with was the diameter of the screw thread for filters. This diameter is a bit bigger than average. While in the 20 mm and 12.4 mm all filters I tested where just *loose* the 32 mm didn't hold the filters at all. I checked it with different brands such as the Lumicon UHC but the problem remained.

Conclusion

Good eye pieces for everyday work and compared to the price they have. The problem with the filter thread could be from the OEM brand or it's just a tolerance of manufacturing not all 4000s are faced with.

If you have own experience with that piece, please...
