review: Zeiss Flektogon 35mm f/2.8 Photo Lens (appr. € 20,- second hand)

This Zeiss lens has 6 elements in 5 groups. Like so many other photo lenses it has to be stopped down to fit the needs for astrophotography with small pixels. For the 7.1 uM pixels of the Canon EOS 300D the best value is between f/4 or f/5.

Star Test

All star test shots were taken with the Canon EOS 300D at highest resolution. The images shown were taken from the upper left corner of the photo and presented here at full resolution.

At f/2.8: aberrations in the corners of the FOV

At f/4: much lower aberrations in the corners of the FOV

At f/5: acceptable aberrations in the corners of the FOV

This is the version with 42mm screw and hence I can easily adopt it to my EF-42mm-adapter. The M42x1 thread is also known as 'universal screw mount' and was used on Pentax, Praktica, Mamiya/Sekor, Yashika and many other brands. The flange-to-film distance is 45.5mm.

Conclusion

This lens is a very good (and cheap second hand!) lens for wide field CCD astrophotography.

At f/5: a part of the summer milky way
